RFD BOYS

In October 1969, when the RFD Boys
played their first concert together, they
were still U-M students, and bluegrass was as unknown here as cable TV in the Ozarks. Today it's as common as e-mail in Appalachia, and the RFD Boys are still going strong. Though they've turned their degrees into full-time, offstage careers, their music has taken them all over Michigan and the Midwest, and as far away as Germany, France, and Malta. In the last three decades they've shared stages with a who's who ofbluegrass and country musicians, from Bill Monroe and RalphStanley to Ricky Skaggs and Randy Travis.

WHO GETS TO CALL IT ART

As the curator of contemporary art at New York’s Metropolitan Museum in the nineteen-sixties, the drolly rambunctious Henry Geldzahler was a key player in the city’s exuberant modern-art scene. Andy Warhol’s confidant, David Hockney’s longtime friend, and a habitué of countless studios, openings, bars, and happenings, Geldzahler (who died in 1994) organized a legendary 1970 exhibit of four hundred works from the previous thirty years of New York art, and time has borne out the power of his exacting taste. Peter Rosen’s engaging documentary about the late connoisseur is over-edited to a music-video rush, but evocative archival footage and trenchant interviews with artists arouse nostalgia for the converging postwar currents that made New York the capital of artistic originality, for the cheap housing that afforded artists the time to achieve it, and for a bygone age of lower image saturation, when the romantic craft of painting was a crucial source of news from the outer and inner world.

B- Movie Madness
ATTACK of the MONSTERS 1969

Three children, two boys and a girl, stumble upon a flying saucer. The boys both step in without hesitating, and are whisked away to a planet in Earth's orbit but on the exact opposite side of the Sun. Inhabiting this planet are two women with Midwestern accents, who hypnotize the children to find they fantasize about milk, donuts, and Gamera, our favorite hero turtle. The women simply want to eat their brains. Back home, no one will believe the little girl's story of alien abduction, not even Officer Concha (pronounced Cornjob). Finally, Gamera rescues the children while fighting Guiron, a monster with a giant knife for a nose. Gamera kills Guiron while doing gymnastics on a parallel bar and takes the kids home, where the kids hope for peace, understanding, and the end of traffic accidents

Considered one of the most realistic and gripping boxing films ever made, THE SET-UP is an emotionally charged story of the dirty dealings of boxing and an aging boxer who ignores them and fights to win. Filmed in real time, the film essentially chronicles 72 uninterrupted minutes of one night. Robert Ryan is Bill "Stoker" Thompson, who, against his wife's (Audrey Totter) pleading, prepares himself for an unimportant fight but one he believes will put him on top again if he wins. Stoker's crooked manager, Tiny (George Tobias), has already taken money from a hood, Danny (Edwin Max), in return for Stoker's throwing the fight. Danny's boss, Little Boy (Alan Baxter), is a local gangster who's invested heavily in Stoker's opponent (Hal Fieberling). Even Stoker's trainer (Percy Helton) is involved in a cut of the money. All of this occurs without the boxer's knowledge, as they all assume he has no chance to win anyway. A grueling fight ensues, enhanced by magnificent cinematography by Milton Krasner and director Robert Wise's expert pacing. THE SET-UP, based on a poem by Joseph Monsure March, is poignant, action-packed, and totally absorbing, a unique viewing experience.

Beyond Beauty Film Series
More than just a pretty face, each of the actresses we chose for our movie series characterize ideals that empowered women, made men swoon, and set standards of elegance and star power emulated by Hollywood actresses today. What better way can you spend time sitting in a darkened room watching the countless screen heroines whose main virtue is the fact that they are beautiful, or fasinatingly complex, or heart stopping talented- sometimes in rare instances, all three of the above. That's what our movie series is all about.

TEN FOOT TALL & 80 PROOF

Over the past 2 years 10/80 has been gaining a reputation as the Bozeman MO. best country dance band, bringing back the rich western tradition of couples dancing. In January 2007 they embarked on a recording project with friend and recording engineer Jamey Warren which resulted in their debut album, “Princess Of Doom”, released in January 2008. This CD is comprised of original material that is reminiscent of ole’ Hank and George Jones but with a 10/80 twist. In an era where people place things in little categorized boxes, Ten Foot Tall and 80 Proof strives to break the mold and give their audience a performance that satisfies the most critical of ears.

HEDGES HORRORS
The 4D MAN 1959/color

Brilliant but irresponsible scientist Tony Nelson (portrayed by James Congdon) develops an amplifier that allows any object to achieve a 4th dimensional state. While in this state that object can pass freely through any other object. Currently unemployed after burning down a college lab, Tony seeks out his brother Scott (Robert Lansing), a researcher working on a material called Cargonite that is so dense as to be impenetrable, with his experiment. Scott is underpaid and underappreciated at his job but doesn't have the drive to challenge his employer for greater recognition. When his girlfriend (Lee Meriwether) falls for Tony an enraged Scott steals Tony's experiment and starts playing with it eventually sending himself into a 4th dimensional state. When he explains this to Tony he learns that the amplifier was not functioning at the time meaning Scott entered the 4D state via his own will. While in the 4D state Scott can pass through any solid object. The downside is that while in the 4D state Scott uses up his life at an accelerated rate. To survive he must replenish his lifeforce by taking it from others by passing through them. Scott starts using his new found power to acquire all the things he felt he was denied; money, recognition, power and the love of his girlfriend. Tony realizes from the nature of the crimes that the only possible explanation is that Scott is on a rampage with his 4D abilities and somehow Tony has to find a way to stop a man who is literally unstoppable.

TONY FURTADO

String-bender extraordinaire Tony Furtado was an established gifted musician and raking in top awards for his banjo playing from the age of 19. Feeling constrained by his instrument as his musical sensibilities broadened, he decided to apply his considerable prowess to mastering the guitar and writing and singing his own material. A talented multi-instrumentalist, cross-pollinating rambler, and budding songwriter, Tony Furtado is an eclectic musician with a knack for mining musical gold from the American folk tradition while also incorporating the best of contemporary rock music.
